I’m going to attempt to explain this truthfully.
In short, Queensland is often referred to as Australia’s Texas.
The Gold Coast is a very glitzy city so you’d expect certain types of people to attract to it but it’s pretty shocking to see the types of people walking the streets. My friends and I (in private) call it the cashed-up bogan phenomenon. The streets are filled with shirtless surfers and bogans and I’ve found them to be very rude and often frightening.
Their state laws are backwards too especially for the gay community. Queensland is mostly rural with a slither of coast at the edge so you’d imagine the majority views that are brought into parliament. As a gay guy going to the supermarket was a constant barrage of stares and abuse. I swear most of these people had never seen someone different to themselves.
I wish I felt differently about the people because it’s so damn beautiful up there. My dream is to retire in a mansion in Noosa over looking the crystal water, ahhhh. I was also born there but Melbourne’s culture and people are worlds apart.
