I live in Prague and it’s basically the norm here. All buildings are around 5 – 6 floors high with these massive courtyards in the middle. Unfortunately, they’re completely under-utilized. Imagine 6 or 8 buildings contribute to the courtyard, but all retain their own property through the use of fences and walls. So this big beautiful space is chopped up into several smaller parcels, which are then just used as storage or a place to put the building garbage cans. You can see the courtyards quite well in [this](http://www.jiping.cz/Vzduch_Big/original/Zizkov_vysilac.JPG) picture, but dont let all that greenery fool you: underneath it all is compartmentalized concrete and useless space.
I’ve long thought about some massive urban project to start creating parks or neighborhood pockets in these courtyards. It would be amazing for the elderly or for people with kids, but it will likely never happen due to a variety of complex reasons.
