Seconds before the guard came “No tripods allowed sir”. Petronas Towers – Kuala Lumpur

A ghetto not-nearly-as-good-as-a-tripod-but-better-than-nothing tension tripod assembly I learned in community college film school as a workaround for when you don’t want to bother getting permits:

* afaik all DSLR tripod mounts are the same size (1/4″)
* take a 1/4″ eye bolt
* throw a nut on it for extra “pushback” (the wrong word for it I’m sure)
* screw it into the bottom of your camera
* tighten a the nut against the camera body
* tie a 6 or 7′ length of rope thin enough to attach to the loop with a clove hitch (get a less-stretchy type like polyethylene or something)
* when you need a *bit* of stabilization stand on it and use the tension in the rope to stabilize your camera (only really stabilizes the camera position, not the pan/tilt)
* wrap it back up and put it in your pocket when you see 5-0 and/or a bored guard at Angkor Wat
