First, in Philly, it’s not downtown, it’s center city. This is by Washington & Colorado, on the border of Graduate Hospital and Point Breeze, looking towards GH. GH has never been that bad, but has been gentrifying over the last few years, and is now one of the more desirable neighborhoods in the city. Point Breeze is still bad, but one developer/coffee shop owner is working hard to change that.
There are two neighborhoods north of this up to Market St. (middle of the city), Fittler Square and Rittenhouse. Both are very nice, and Rittenhouse is the richest neighborhood in the city, and where the tall buildings you see are located.
Philly is *very* block-by-block. I wouldn’t feel safe a few blocks southwest of here after midnight, but I’d feel fine right there at all hours, though there’s not much reason to go to this corner unless you’re just passing through.
**edit** okay, two of the four. The two on the right are Liberty I & II, in Rittenhouse. The two on the left are the Comcast center and the Mellon Building (I think? It’s sad I don’t know, I exit Suburban Station through that buildings lobby every non-bikeable day), both are in Logan Square.
